New Broadcasting laws in Ghana

The Minister for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has disclosed that the government is developing 15 new broadcasting laws to regulate and guide Ghana’s media industry.

Speaking on Accra-based Joy FM on Tuesday, August 12, the minister said the legislative measures form part of the long-awaited Broadcasting Bill, which aims to streamline the functions of the National Media Commission (NMC), the National Communications Authority (NCA), and the National Film Authority (NFA).

Hon. Sam George explained that the new laws will address key challenges in the media space, including frequency mismanagement, content regulation, and the fight against misinformation.

“We want a legal framework that promotes responsible broadcasting while safeguarding the constitutional rights of the media,” he said.

He further indicated that some provisions will focus on the allocation and monitoring of radio and television frequencies, ensuring that dormant licenses are revoked to free up the spectrum for active players.

The minister stressed that the reforms are not meant to stifle press freedom but to promote professionalism and accountability in Ghana’s media landscape. The Broadcasting Bill is expected to be presented to Parliament in the coming weeks for consideration.
