Bishop of Wa Diocese Celebrates Palm Sunday with Jirapa Faithful

The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Wa, Most Reverend Francis Bomansaan (M. Afr.), led a vibrant and spiritually uplifting Palm Sunday celebration in Jirapa on Sunday, April 6, 2025. The episcopal Mass at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church marked the beginning of Holy Week and drew hundreds of enthusiastic parishioners in a show of faith and unity.

Palm Sunday, also known as the Triumphal Entry, commemorates Jesus Christ’s entry into Jerusalem, an event that heralds the start of the most sacred week on the Christian liturgical calendar. It reenacts the moment when crowds laid palm branches and garments on the road as Jesus, riding a donkey, entered the city to shouts of “Hosanna in the highest,” signifying his recognition as Messiah and King.

In Jirapa, the celebration began at Nayiri Park, where Bishop Bomansaan, assisted by the Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Bennett Bacheyie, and other clergy, blessed palm fronds held aloft by worshippers. A lively procession followed, with congregants singing, dancing, and drumming through the streets en route to St. Joseph’s Church, transforming the town into a scene of joy and devotion.

Delivering his homily, Bishop Bomansaan emphasized themes of simplicity, humility, and sacrificial love. He urged the faithful to reflect deeply on the passion, death, and resurrection of Christ, reminding them of Christ’s enduring example of compassion, especially toward women and children.

“In the face of adversity, we are called to remain courageous, just like the women who stood by Jesus even as Roman soldiers carried out their brutal mission,” he said. His message resonated with many, offering both spiritual nourishment and encouragement.

Rev. Fr. Jacob Nangpelle of St. Joseph’s Parish described the Bishop’s visit as a significant spiritual boost. “When a Bishop celebrates Mass in a parish, it symbolically transforms that parish into the center of the diocese, reaffirming the connection between local communities and the wider Church,” he said.

The celebration was graced by prominent Catholic organizations including the Knights and Ladies of Marshall, the Knights and Ladies of St. John, St. Theresa’s Society, and various youth groups, whose participation added pomp and color to the occasion.

The Jirapa Municipal Police Command ensured a peaceful and well-coordinated event, which parishioners widely hailed as a spiritual success.

Palm Sunday serves as a time for Christians to renew their faith, reflect on Christ’s kingship, and prepare for the Easter Triduum, the solemn commemoration of the crucifixion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
