A British Airways passenger was arrested at Kotoka International Airport (KIA) in Accra on Sunday, May 25, 2025, for attempting to smuggle approximately 18 kilograms of cannabis onto a flight bound for London.
The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) intercepted the suspect during routine security checks. The seized cannabis has an estimated street value of $232,000. The individual is currently in custody, assisting authorities with ongoing investigations.
This incident underscores the persistent challenges Ghana faces as a transit point for illicit drug trafficking. In response to such threats, President John Dramani Mahama has recently ordered a comprehensive investigation into alleged drug trafficking activities at KIA, emphasizing the government’s zero-tolerance policy towards narcotics-related offenses.
NACOC continues to collaborate with international partners to enhance surveillance and enforcement measures at all entry and exit points. Travelers are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities.
