The Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly (CCMA) rolls out a demolition campaign targeting all dilapidated structures within the metropolis.
This wake-up call follows a tragic incident involving the collapse of an old building at London Bridge in Kotokoraba. The incident involved five occupants, sparking widespread concern over the safety of similar buildings in the area among residents.
The incident left three people injured, who are currently receiving treatment at Awin Hospital. Two others, 79-year-old Ataa Panin and 84-year-old Emmanuel Ankaful, were found among the debris and were declared dead on arrival at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital.
While speaking, Cape Coast Mayor George Justice Arthur pledged a thorough structural assessment of all high-risk buildings in the city, emphasizing the urgent need to protect lives, especially during the ongoing season of torrential rainfall.
He said, “We have also identified some areas where they are all in a dilapidated state. They are almost in the same state, and we are going to make sure we demolish all of them. But it will not last only today because there is a disaster. We will make sure that we fight this holistically.”
