Fatal Multi-Vehicle Crash at UCC Entrance

Accident at UCC

A tragic road accident occurred on Thursday, June 19, 2025, directly opposite the University of Cape Coast’s (UCC) main gate, along the stretch leading from the western approach. The crash, which involved a speeding truck, a private vehicle, a taxi, and a tricycle, left the scene in chaos and panic, drawing a large crowd of students and local residents.

Eyewitnesses described a horrific scene of mangled vehicles, most notably a red private car, the taxi, and the tricycle, strewn across the road, as emergency personnel and bystanders rushed to assist the injured. While the exact number of casualties remains unconfirmed at the time of reporting, multiple individuals reportedly sustained serious injuries.

According to those present, the truck, alleged to have been speeding, rammed into the other vehicles with devastating force. The incident has once again reignited concerns over road safety in the UCC area, particularly the absence of traffic control systems at the university’s heavily trafficked entrance.

“This road was recently expanded into a dual carriageway, yet there are still no traffic lights or enough speed ramps to slow vehicles down,” said Abigail Mensah, a Level 300 student who witnessed the aftermath. “Drivers speed past recklessly, and it’s just a matter of time before more lives are lost if no action is taken.”

Other residents and drivers echoed similar concerns, urging the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly and the Ghana Highway Authority to prioritize the installation of traffic lights at the university’s main gate. Many also called for additional speed control measures to supplement the few ramps currently in place, which they say are ineffective on the widened road.

“This is not the first time we’re seeing such a deadly crash here,” said Kweku Arhin, a taxi driver who plies the UCC route. “With thousands of students crossing the road daily, we need traffic lights and clear pedestrian signage before more lives are claimed.”

The university community has repeatedly petitioned authorities for enhanced road safety infrastructure. While some speed ramps have been installed in past years, residents say these efforts have been rendered insufficient by the recent road expansion and increasing vehicle speeds.

As investigations continue into the exact cause of the accident, the UCC community is once again left mourning—and hoping that this tragedy will finally prompt decisive government action to safeguard lives in one of Ghana’s busiest academic hubs.
