A torrential downpour on June 15, 2025, triggered severe flooding across the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis, leaving parts of the city underwater and many residents displaced. Key areas including Market Circle, Effiakuma, Anaji, and Kojokrom were among the worst affected, as overflowing drains and rising water levels turned streets into rivers.
Videos circulating on social media captured dramatic scenes of submerged vehicles, inundated homes, and pedestrians wading through waist-deep water. One widely shared clip showed a taxi being swept slightly off the road near New Site, highlighting the force of the floodwaters.
According to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), no fatalities have been reported, but dozens of residents have been displaced. Emergency rescue teams have been deployed to assist with evacuations and to clear debris and blockages from key drainage channels.
“This was sudden and intense. We couldn’t save much before the water entered,” lamented a shopkeeper at the Takoradi Market Circle, who lost merchandise to the rising waters.
Experts have once again blamed the persistent flooding on inadequate drainage infrastructure and unregulated urban expansion. In response, the Western Regional Coordinating Council has announced that emergency drainage works will commence in the most vulnerable zones. Authorities are also urging residents to stay vigilant as more rain is forecast in the coming days.
With climate change and poor urban planning contributing to increasingly frequent floods, local leaders are facing renewed pressure to implement long-term flood control strategies to safeguard lives and property.
