Former Education Minister Escapes Gunfire on Official Duty

Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum

Ghana’s former Education Minister and current Member of Parliament, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has revealed that he narrowly escaped death after unknown gunmen opened fire on his convoy during an official assignment.

Speaking to Joy News, Dr. Adutwum said the attack occurred while he was on a field visit to inspect educational facilities and assess student safety in a rural community. He recounted that multiple shots were fired at his convoy, shattering vehicle windows and leaving several members of his team with minor injuries.

“It was a terrifying moment. One moment, we were inspecting school blocks, the next, bullets were flying. I thank God no life was lost,” he said.

The MP expressed concern about the lack of adequate security measures for government officials working in volatile or remote areas. He urged authorities to improve protection for public servants carrying out official duties outside major urban centers.

Following the incident, Dr. Adutwum met with security agencies and local authorities to investigate the attack and called for swift action to apprehend those responsible. He also visited the affected school to reassure students and staff shaken by the violence.

He further appealed to local communities to support security efforts, urging residents to report suspicious activity and cooperate with authorities to safeguard public officials.

The shooting has drawn condemnation from opposition leaders and civil society organizations, who are calling for stronger security protocols and better coordination between government ministries and law enforcement when officials travel to high-risk areas.

The incident adds to growing concerns about the safety of public servants in Ghana and highlights the urgent need for preventive measures to protect officials working in vulnerable regions.
