In a heartfelt statement following his removal from office, former Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare has expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve Ghana and reaffirmed his unwavering dedication to the nation.
Dr. Dampare, in a statement dated March 14, 2025, reflected on his 35-year journey in the Ghana Police Service, rising through the ranks from General Constable to becoming the youngest Commissioner of Police and IGP in the Fourth Republic. He extended appreciation to former President Nana Akufo-Addo for entrusting him with the role and acknowledged President John Mahama for their cooperative working relationship. Additionally, he expressed gratitude to religious and traditional leaders, security agencies, civil society groups, and international partners for their support during his tenure.
“I have served the Ghana Police Service for 35 of my nearly 55 years of life with an unblemished record. I remain energetic, committed, and enthusiastic about serving this nation that I love,” Dr. Dampare stated.
His remarks came a day after President Mahama officially appointed Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohunu as the new IGP on March 13, 2025. COP Yohunu, a seasoned law enforcement officer with nearly four decades of experience, previously served as Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations, a position he assumed in July 2024 under former President Akufo-Addo.
As he takes over leadership of the Ghana Police Service, COP Yohunu has pledged to uphold professionalism and integrity within the force. In his inaugural address, he assured Ghanaians of his commitment to building on the foundation laid by his predecessors to enhance public trust and ensure national security.
With this transition, the Ghana Police Service enters a new chapter, as expectations remain high for continued excellence in law enforcement and public safety.
