Ghana Card Integration to Replace Student ID

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has unveiled plans to make the Ghana Card serve as an official student identification card in schools and universities across the country.

Executive Secretary of the NIA, Wisdom Yayra Koku, explained that the initiative is part of broader efforts to harmonize identification systems in Ghana. He noted that the Ghana Card already doubles as a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN), Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) number, and National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) card.

The Ghana Card contains all the data typically found on a student ID,” Koku said. “Even at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), the same data is used for registrations and licenses. The chip on the card is multipurpose and has enough capacity to harmonize data from different institutions. We are initiating talks to merge all these identification systems, so students can rely solely on their Ghana Card instead of carrying separate student IDs.”

Once implemented, the integration will allow students to use their Ghana Card for academic verification, campus services, and other student-related activities, streamlining identification processes across educational institutions.
