The Government of Ghana has announced a significant policy shift in its National Service Scheme, introducing mandatory military training for all National Service Personnel (NSP) beginning August 3, 2025. This initiative, part of the National Service Emergency Response Readiness Programme (NSERRP), aims to instil discipline, patriotism, and physical fitness among the nation’s youth.

The NSERRP was first unveiled by President John Dramani Mahama during his maiden State of the Nation Address on February 27, 2025, reflecting his vision of nurturing a disciplined and resilient youth population. The programme entails up to two months of basic military drills and orientation exercises designed to equip NSPs with essential skills for national development and emergency response readiness.

Director-General of the National Service Authority (NSA), Mr. Felix Gyamfi, emphasized the transformative potential of the initiative, stating, “The introduction of this military training is a step in the right direction and must be embraced by all and sundry as one of the indicators for resetting the country, particularly the youth.”

The Ghana Armed Forces have expressed full support for the programme. Brigadier General Amoah-Boakye, representing the Military High Command, assured the NSA of the military’s preparedness to deliver the requisite training when the programme officially commences.

The NSERRP is set to commence with the first cohort of service personnel on August 3, 2025, marking a new chapter in Ghana’s approach to national service and youth development.
