Ghana Maritime Authority Launches Rescue Vessel on Volta Lake

The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) has strengthened safety measures on the Volta Lake with the launch and deployment of a state-of-the-art search and rescue vessel, “Martey Korley,” to Kpando Torkor.

Previously stationed at Tema, the vessel was officially launched at Akosombo before sailing to its new base in the Volta Region. The move is part of a broader GMA strategy to improve maritime safety on Ghana’s inland waters and align with the government’s 24-Hour Economy vision.

This deployment is a key part of our broader strategy to enhance safety on the Volta Lake and to strategically position the Authority to support the 24-Hour Economy. It is the first rescue vessel of its kind in the country,” said Captain (GN) Rtd. Dr. Kamal-Deen Ali, GMA’s Director-General.

The Martey Korley can rescue up to 150 people in a single operation, providing a critical lifeline for communities and travelers who depend on the Volta Lake for transport, commerce, and daily livelihoods.

Docked at Kpando Torkor, the vessel will serve as a rapid-response asset in emergencies, complementing GMA’s ongoing efforts to enforce safety regulations, conduct patrols, and provide public education on maritime safety.

Dr. Ali reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to protecting lives on Ghana’s waterways:

The Ghana Maritime Authority remains steadfast in safeguarding lives and promoting safety across all inland waters. The Martey Korley symbolizes our dedication to modern, proactive maritime operations.”

The deployment has been widely welcomed by local residents and transport operators, who view the vessel as a long-overdue boost to safety on one of West Africa’s busiest inland waterways.
