Ghanaians should prepare for a temporary nationwide power outage on Sunday, July 13, as part of a planned maintenance exercise by gas supplier ENI, the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has confirmed.
The announcement was made on Monday, July 8, 2025, during the launch of the 161kV Anwomaso–Kumasi transmission line reconstruction project in Kumasi. The project, which is part of efforts to improve Ghana’s power transmission infrastructure, comes within the ongoing reforms to stabilize the energy sector.
According to the Minister, ENI will shut down its gas valves temporarily on July 13 to carry out maintenance works aimed at increasing gas output to 270 million standard cubic feet. This will affect power generation and result in a 4 to 6-hour power outage across parts of the country.
“This Sunday, ENI will turn off their valves temporarily to increase gas production to about 270 million standard cubic feet,” Jinapor said.
He explained that although authorities considered switching thermal plants to liquid fuel to avoid the outage, technical constraints, including the need to change nozzles and recalibrate systems, made that option unfeasible for such a short duration.
The Minister assured the public that this is a temporary and controlled disruption, not a return to the prolonged power crises of the past. He emphasized that the maintenance is crucial to enhancing long-term power reliability and energy sustainability.
Jinapor also revealed that ENI has made new commercial oil discoveries, and Tullow Oil plans to ramp up investments in Ghana’s upstream petroleum sector — developments expected to boost energy production and economic growth.
The Energy Ministry is urging the public to remain calm and make the necessary arrangements ahead of Sunday’s interruption. It further indicated that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) will provide specific updates and schedules as needed. The Ministry reiterated that this short-term inconvenience will lead to long-term improvements in Ghana’s energy supply, as part of broader national energy reforms.
