Ghana’s Fidelis Da-uri Wins Prestigious George Atkins Communications Award for Transforming Rural Farming Through Radio

Jirapa FM’s Fidelis Da-uri has been honoured with the 2025 George Atkins Communications Award from Farm Radio International for his exceptional dedication to food security and poverty reduction through innovative radio broadcasting.

The award, named after Canadian broadcaster George Stuart Atkins, was established to recognize outstanding contributions to agricultural communication. Farm Radio International, a Canada-based NGO founded in 1979, collaborates with radio stations across Africa to empower small-scale farmers with vital agricultural knowledge.

Da-uri’s approach to agricultural communication has been groundbreaking. With a listenership of over 250,000 farmers, he utilizes radio learning techniques, including the “Talking Book,” a tool that delivers farming information through engaging formats like songs, interviews, and drama. By actively gathering feedback from farmers, he ensures each episode is tailored to their needs, making his programs highly impactful.

Hailing from a farming community in Jirapa, Da-uri’s love for radio started early. As a child, he was often seen carrying a small radio around his neck, enthusiastically sharing programs with others, a habit that earned him the nickname “The Radio Boy.” This early passion blossomed into a career dedicated to using radio as a tool for education, health, agriculture, and social development.

Over the years, he has collaborated with major organizations, including GIZ, UNICEF, and USAID, working on diverse community-based projects. His contributions have earned him several accolades, including Farm Radio International’s “Silver Star Performers” award.

The award presentation took place at the offices of Jirapa FM, where General Manager Kevin Ganaa and Agric Extension Officer Joseph Banmiyan, Da-uri’s close collaborator, handed over the award.

Speaking at the event, Rosita Atisu, a Project Officer with Farm Radio International, emphasized the rigorous and transparent selection process, affirming that Da-uri’s impact on rural farmers made him a worthy winner. She commended his dedication and expressed Farm Radio International’s excitement about future collaborations with Jirapa FM.

Colleagues, well-wishers, and members of the community celebrated Da-uri’s achievement, urging him to continue his inspiring work and strive for even greater heights.
