Health Minister Reaffirms Commitment to Affordable Care

Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has reiterated the ministry’s commitment to partnering with health unions to ensure affordable and accessible healthcare, despite what he described as an unresolved apology from the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives’ Association (GRNMA).

In an interview with TV3, Mr. Akandoh addressed recent derogatory remarks made against him by the General Secretary of GRNMA, Dr. David Tenkorang Twum. The comments, delivered on August 26, 2025, during Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen program, followed reports of an alleged assault on a health worker at Ridge Hospital.

The minister dismissed the criticisms, stressing that his focus remains on delivering healthcare to Ghanaians rather than responding to personal attacks.

“My target is the ordinary Ghanaian, the 33 million people, the over one hundred thousand nurses. As for the leaders and whoever said what, their motivation is up to them. I will continue to work with all union members to build a health sector that is affordable, accessible, equitable, and sustainable,” he said.

Mr. Akandoh also cautioned that such disputes should not derail government policy. He revealed that the ministry is collaborating with the Ghana Police Service to strengthen security at health facilities nationwide.

“We are going to ensure district health directors link up with police superintendents or district commanders in their jurisdictions so we can establish proper collaboration and respond as needed,” he explained.

Looking ahead, the minister disclosed that the government plans to construct at least two Community-Based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds in every district while addressing the regional shortfall of six hospitals.

“We will prioritize areas already covered under Agenda 111 to ensure equitable distribution of health facilities,” he added.
