Heavy Downpour Triggers Severe Flooding in Kasoa

Kasoa Downpour

A torrential rainstorm on the night of Sunday, May 18, 2025, led to severe flooding in Kasoa, submerging homes, stranding vehicles, and displacing residents. The downpour, which lasted several hours, overwhelmed the town’s drainage systems, causing widespread inundation.

Videos circulating on social media depict streets transformed into rivers, with residents wading through waist-deep water to salvage belongings. The flooding disrupted transportation, leaving many commuters stranded and damaging numerous properties.

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has activated emergency response teams to assist affected individuals. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported as of this morning. Kasoa, situated approximately 75 meters above sea level, is prone to flooding during its seven-month rainy season from April through October. The town’s rapid urbanization, inadequate drainage infrastructure, and poor waste management practices exacerbate the flooding risk. Blocked gutters and unauthorized constructions in flood-prone areas hinder water flow, leading to frequent inundations.

Residents are calling on local authorities to implement long-term solutions, including the construction of proper drainage systems and enforcement of building regulations, to mitigate future flooding incidents.

As the rainy season continues, authorities urge residents to remain vigilant and report any emergencies to NADMO for prompt assistance.
