Jirapa Naa Yir Park to Miss Out on Major Facelift Due to Land Litigation

State of the Durbar Ground

The historic traditional public durbar ground of Jirapa, which hosts most public and social events in the Jirapa area, is likely to miss the chance of an upgrade due to a pending lawsuit.

The said piece of land, which also serves as the forecourt of the Jirapa Traditional Council meeting hall, is being earmarked for improvement by the municipal assembly under the Gulf of Guinea Northern Regions Social Cohesion (SOCO) Project, where an astroturf, among other amenities, would be provided to give it a modern appeal and convenience.

However, a group of people is laying claim to that piece of land and has sought redress at the Jirapa Circuit Court, where an injunction has been placed on ongoing work after the contractor has reported on site and has begun work.

So far, traditional rituals have been performed to commence work, and a foundation has been dug, aided by the youth of the area, but work cannot proceed due to the court order.

The custodians of the land of the Jirapa Traditional Area, “Tindaanba,” in consultation with the paramount chief of the Jirapa Traditional Area, Naa Dinaa Donglabong Ganaa III, have considered relocating the project to a yet-to-be-mentioned location “in the spirit of peace, goodwill, and development,” as indicated by Naa Ganaa III.
