The appointment was announced during the 14th African Internet Governance Forum (AfIGF), held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, from May 26 to 31, 2025. The high-level event was organized under the auspices of the African Union (AU), the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), and Tanzania’s Ministry of Communication and Information Technology. It brought together legislators, policymakers, and industry leaders to deliberate on the continent’s digital future.

Expressing his gratitude, Hon. Sumah stated:
“This is both an honor and a responsibility. Africa stands at a pivotal moment where digital innovation can unlock unprecedented opportunities. I look forward to working with my colleagues to ensure that our policies empower communities, foster innovation, and drive sustainable progress.”
Stakeholders have welcomed his appointment, calling it a strategic win for West Africa. Dr. Amani Abou-Zeid, AU Commissioner for Infrastructure and Energy, noted:
“The inclusion of dynamic leaders like Hon. Sumah ensures that Africa’s digital policies are shaped by those who understand both grassroots challenges and global opportunities.”
Hon. Sumah reaffirmed his dedication to leveraging his position for the benefit of both Ghana and the wider continent:
“This is about more than technology; it’s about creating opportunities for our youth, securing Africa’s digital future, and ensuring no one is left behind.”
