NHIS Begins Awareness Campaign in Upper West

The Upper West Regional National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) has launched its regional awareness creation programme for the Jirapa, Lawra, Nandom, and Lambussie districts as part of activities leading up to the 2025 Annual Health Insurance Month Celebration slated for November.

The regional launch, held in Jirapa, featured a vibrant roadshow that included a float, a health walk, registration and renewal exercises, and direct public education along the principal streets of the municipality.

Participants also visited shops, workplaces, and homes to interact with residents, share information about NHIS services, and assist with on-the-spot registration and membership renewal.

Speaking at a gathering at the forecourt of the Jirapa Post Office, the Upper West Regional NHIS Manager, Rashid Tindogo, reiterated that the Scheme’s mission is to ensure that every resident in Ghana has access to quality healthcare.

He explained that, beyond the traditional registration process, the NHIS has introduced convenient digital channels that allow people to self-register, renew, activate, or add new members anywhere in Ghana.

“Members and prospective clients can download the MyNHIS App on the Google Play Store,” Mr. Tindogo said. “For those without smartphones, our services can be accessed by dialling *929# on any mobile network.”

The Jirapa Municipal NHIS Manager, Dery Francis Xavier, expressed satisfaction with registration figures in the area but noted that his team is aiming higher.

“Our performance is among the best in the region, but we’re targeting a 100 percent registration mark,” he said. “We know the work ahead, but we’re motivated to achieve it. I encourage everyone here to carry the message to your communities, families, and friends.”

Mr. Xavier also reminded the public that the NHIS office and phone lines remain open to anyone needing assistance.

In his remarks, Baghr Francis, the Nandom Municipal NHIS Manager, acknowledged that registration in his district remains encouraging but warned against practices that strain the scheme’s resources.

“Avoidable hospital visits caused by road accidents, drug abuse, and other careless behaviours place unnecessary pressure on the Scheme and our health facilities,” he noted.

He urged residents to adopt healthy lifestyles, exercise self-discipline, and go for regular medical check-ups to prevent such incidents.

The event was described as successful, peaceful, and engaging, combining fun activities with education and awareness creation.

Personnel from the Ghana Police Service, National Ambulance Service, Ghana Prisons Service, and Ghana Immigration Service not only maintained order but also joined the awareness exercise to support the NHIS mission.
