In a significant development for Ghana’s law enforcement, President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the new Inspector General of Police (IGP). The swearing-in ceremony took place today, March 14, 2025, at the Jubilee House, marking a pivotal moment in the nation’s commitment to bolstering security and public trust in the police force.
COP Yohuno succeeds Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, whose tenure concluded amid a broader restructuring initiative within the Ghana Police Service. While specific reasons for Dr. Dampare’s removal have not been officially disclosed, sources indicate that the leadership change aims to rejuvenate the operational direction of the service.

President Mahama, addressing attendees at the ceremony, underscored the critical role of the police in maintaining national security. He lauded the dedication of officers and emphasized the government’s commitment to providing the necessary resources and training to enhance their effectiveness. “You are the backbone of our national security framework, and your dedication and sacrifices keep our country safe,” the President remarked.
COP Yohuno brings to the position a wealth of experience garnered over a distinguished career in law enforcement. His previous roles include serving as the Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIGP) in charge of Operations, where he fostered strong collaboration between police leadership and operational units nationwide. His tenure as Accra Regional Commander from 2013 to 2015 was marked by strategic initiatives that enhanced public safety in the capital.
In his inaugural address as IGP, COP Yohuno expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him and reiterated his commitment to upholding the rule of law. He called upon all officers to unite in their efforts to ensure the safety and security of all Ghanaians, stating, “Together, we will build a police service that is professional, accountable, and responsive to the needs of our communities.”
The leadership transition comes at a time when Ghana is navigating complex security challenges. The appointment of COP Yohuno is anticipated to infuse new vigor into the police service’s strategies, reinforcing public confidence and enhancing the effectiveness of law enforcement across the nation
