A tragic incident has cast a dark shadow over Lawra Senior High School in the Upper West Region of Ghana, where seven students are feared drowned after a canoe capsized in the Dikpe River on the morning of Saturday, June 14, 2025.
The students, reportedly participating in their routine morning jogging exercise, attempted to cross the river using a canoe. According to eyewitness accounts, the vessel overturned mid-crossing, plunging its occupants into the water.
So far, three students have been confirmed dead, while three others managed to swim to safety. A search and rescue operation is underway to locate the remaining four students, who are still unaccounted for.
Personnel from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and the Ghana Police Service are leading the operation, with support from local volunteers.
The entire school community has been left reeling from the shock, and grief has gripped the Lawra municipality as residents await further news. Authorities have not yet issued an official statement, but an investigation is expected to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
