Trump Threatens to Cut U.S. Aid and Deploy Troops to Nigeria Over Alleged Killing of Christians

U.S. President Donald Trump has warned of severe consequences for Nigeria over what he describes as the “killing of Christians” in the country, threatening to cut all American aid and suggesting possible military intervention

In a post on his social media platform, Trump said the U.S. “will immediately stop all aid” if Nigeria’s government fails to curb the alleged persecution of Christians. He added that he could authorize military action to “wipe out the Islamic terrorists” responsible for what he called “horrible atrocities.”

When questioned by reporters about the possibility of deploying U.S. troops, Trump responded, “Could be,” leaving open the option of direct military involvement.

The Nigerian government, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has dismissed Trump’s claims as misleading. In a statement, Tinubu emphasized that Nigeria is not a religiously intolerant country and continues to foster peace among Christians and Muslims. Presidential adviser Daniel Bwala added that Nigeria would accept U.S. assistance only if it “respects our territorial integrity.”

Security analysts, however, have cautioned against framing Nigeria’s violence solely in religious terms. They point out that the country’s conflicts, involving extremist groups like Boko Haram, banditry, and farmer-herder clashes, are rooted in complex social and economic issues rather than religion alone.

Experts warn that any abrupt suspension of U.S. aid or unilateral military action could strain diplomatic relations and further destabilize West Africa.

For now, both nations appear to be weighing their next moves carefully, as the world watches the tense exchange unfold.
