Minister of Finance Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, on Monday, August 25, formally announced the commencement of the Investigation Board’s work into the recent military helicopter crash that killed eight people, including two cabinet ministers.
The crash, which occurred on August 6 in the Ashanti Region, claimed the lives of Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, four crew members, and two senior government officials. The group was on a mission to address illegal mining when the tragedy struck.
Dr. Forson outlined the composition of the board, which is chaired by the National Security Coordinator and includes representatives from the Ghana Air Force and the Aircraft Accident and Incident Investigation and Prevention Bureau (AIB Ghana). He noted that the United States Air Force will provide technical support throughout the inquiry to guarantee a thorough and transparent process.
Investigators have already retrieved the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder for detailed analysis. Officials say U.S. involvement will lend credibility and international expertise to the probe.
President John Mahama has declared a period of national mourning and assured that the government will uncover the cause of the crash and publish the findings once the investigation concludes.
